The Melbourne suburb of Wheelers Hill situated 23km south-east of the city’s central business district. It is within the City of Monash local government area and was named after the Wheeler brothers who were settlers in the area. The suburb has a population of over 19,000 people.
History
When the most common form of travel was by horse, the Wheelers Hill Hotel and Post Office would have been a major stop off point on the 6 to 8-hour journey into Melbourne. In the late 1920s, a fire destroyed the Wheelers Mansion and the Mulgrave Post Office
opened for business in 1869.
The site of the old Bellenden Homestead is still visible at Columbia Park on the Jells Road. The property which was built by a retired banker from Melbourne would have had a panoramic view out across the Dandenong Ranges.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The Jells Park provides 127 hectares of public space including cycle track and walking routes and it also features a large lake. There are 7 schools in the area and plenty of sporting facilities too including a golf club.
The suburb has an art gallery which contains many significant collections of historic Australian Photography and a public library.
