History

The suburb was originally named Wyndham when it was first established in the 1850s. In the early 1900s, the name was changed to Werribee – the Aboriginal word for ‘backbone’.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Werribee is home to Werribee Park and National Equestrian Centre, as well as Werribee Open Range Zoo. At the zoo, you can go on an African adventure safari tour and see some of the world’s most famous grassland animals. There’s also the chance to have a close encounter with giraffes, and the zoo recently welcomed the birth of lion cubs and blackbuck calves.

Lerderderg State Park is around an hour’s drive away from Werribee and is a favourite site for walking and camping.
