Wendouree is a suburb in the northwestern rural-urban fringe of Ballarat. 5km of Ballarat Central, it’s the most populated suburb in the City of Ballarat and has a population of over 10,750.

History

Wendouree is named after the nearby lake, Lake Wendouree. The lake gets its name from the Wathaurong word “wendaaree” which means “be off” or “go away”.

In 1838, the squatter William Cross Yuille camped on the shores of Lake Wendouree, then called Black Swamp. He was the first resident of Ballarat.

On 17th February 1871, Wendouree Post Office opened. The area saw a lot of urban growth after WW2. This was encouraged by the industrial development of the areas to the west of the suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Wendouree features many landmarks including the Minerdome, home of the Ballarat Miners and Ballarat Rush. The Ballarat Showgrounds, a popular multi-purpose venue, is located in the town and is the venue for the Ballarat Show, an agricultural show.
