With a population of over 5,500, Warrandyte is a suburb in Melbourne. It is 24km north-east of the Central Business District and lies in the City of Manningham council.

History

Warrandyte takes its name from a Wurundjeri dreamtime story. In this story, a great eagle threw a star into the earth. That star created the gorge that houses Warrandyte. So, the name Warrandyte means “that which is thrown”.

In 1851, Louis Michel first discovered gold at Anderson’s Creek. However, it wasn’t till the late 19th century that gold mining became popular in Warrandyte.

The popularity of “bush art” in the early 20th century made Warrandyte a popular destination for artists.

Every year in March, Warrandyte holds the Warrandyte Festival. This festival features local produce and crafts from residents.

Warrandyte is popular with people who love the outdoors. People are encouraged to go walking, bike riding, and kayaking in the many parks and reserves.
