Warragul is a town in Victoria with a population of over 14,000. It is situated 104 kilometres east-southeast of Melbourne and forms part of a larger urban area.

History

The name of the town comes from the Aboriginal language. It means “wild dog.” Warragul became a settlement area after the build of the Traralgon railway line in 1877.

In 1920, the former Prince of Wales visited Australia. The existing roads were renamed Princes Highway to mark the occasion. A ceremony was held in Warragul when the highway officially opened.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Warragul hosts the annual Warragul Show in March each year. It’s a farming and livestock show, which features fireworks, rides and stalls. The town is home to 7 schools and 2 tertiary institutions.

Lots of sports clubs can be found in Warragul including soccer, athletic and Australian rules football. There is a greyhound racing club in the suburb. Warragul is home to 2 commercial radio stations.
