History

Viewbank falls within the local government area of the City of Banyule. The original occupants of this area are the Wurundjeri people. They spoke Woiwurrung, a language that survives to today, though it is not spoken widely. The Wurundjeri are a part of the Kulin nation. This is made up of five tribes who are located in Victoria.

The suburb gets its name from a farming property that is no longer standing. Grain silos on what is today Banyule Road hint at the suburb’s farming past.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Viewbank is close to the CBD. Good for the active visitor, it has an abundance of bike tracks and walks. The Main Yarra Trail, for example, is good for both walkers and cyclists. The suburb is also home to Viewbank College.
