Tullamarine is a suburb of Victoria and home to around 6,200 people. It is situated 17 kilometres north-west of Melbourne’s central business district and close to Melbourne Airport.
History
The town takes its name from Tullamareena, a member of the Wurundjeri tribe. He escaped from the first Melbourne Gaol and burnt it down. Tullamarine Village used to be on Lancefield Road, which is now known as Melrose Drive.
A primary school was built on land now in the airport. By the 1930s, Tullamarine had a church, as well as football and tennis clubs. It wasn’t until the 1950s when Tullamarine became a residential and agricultural town. In 1955, the area was home to a drive-in with one screen. It closed in 1984.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Tullamarine is close to schools and the Gladstone Park Shopping Centre. There is a bus service that runs through the town. The suburb has lots of beautiful parks including Jack Ginifer Reserve and Gladstone Park Reserve.
You can find a Westfield Shopping Centre at the airport and the Broadmeadows Shopping Centre is just a short bus ride away. Tullamarine is home to a Senior Citizens Club, bowls club and many sports clubs.
