Surrey Hills is a restful area of Victoria with a population of around 13,000. It is 11 kilometres east of Melbourne’s central business district and has some fantastic parks.

History

The suburb of Surrey Hills saw its first settlers in the late 19th century. It was later developed by a real estate association. Victorian and Edwardian style homes were built in brick and weatherboard. The first post office opened in 1884.

Originally, the streets of Surrey Hills were planted with plane and pin oak trees. You can still find these trees in the area today. Development was stopped in the 1890s and didn’t continue until after the World War I.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

You can find lots of streets named after English counties including Kent, Suffolk and Norfolk. There are a couple of primary schools in the town, as well as a strip of 300 shops.

Surrey Hills has its own railway station and a good selection of cafes. The major parks in the area are called Surrey Gardens and South Surrey Park.
