History

Stratford is said to have historical links to Stratford-Upon-Avon in the UK. This is due to the town’s location on the River Avon. However the Brayakuloong people lived and farmed there before the arrival of European settlers. In the 1860s the town profited from nearby gold rushes. Now it serves as an agricultural and tourist hub.

Shakespeare on the River Festival has been an important event in Stratford since it started in 1989. It showcases Shakespeare adaptations as well as contemporary Australian playwriting. Tourists on the Howitt Bicycle Trail often stop in Stratford for pub food or a good cup of tea.
