Stawell is a town in Victoria. It’s located in the Wimmera region, and has a population of more than 6,100. Stawell serves as the main administration centre for the Shire of Northern Grampians local government area.
History
Stawell’s origins lie in the Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s and 60s. It was established in 1853 after the discovery of gold deposits, and known originally as Pleasant Creek. The town’s name changed to Stawell in 1861 in honour of Sir William Stawell. When the gold rush was at its peak, there were thought to be over 25,000 people in Stawell and the surrounding areas. Gold mining had largely finished by the 1920s, but kicked off again in 1981. Stawell remains one of Victoria’s few active gold mining towns.
