St Kilda East is a suburb of Victoria 6 kilometres south-east from Melbourne’s central business district. It has a population of over 12,500 and an artistic community.

History

The town of St Kilda East saw its first settlers in the 1850s. At the time, it was common to see small timer shacks around the suburb. By the late 1870s, terraced houses were built around the local railway line.

An area of the town called Alma Park was set out for religious people. A large number of chapels and convents were built along Chapel Street as a result.

St Kilda East is a wonderful town filled with cafes, parks and restaurants. It boasts art deco-style houses and apartments, as well as a shopping precinct called Balaclava. The area is also home to the Red Stitch Actors Theatre.
