Springvale is a large, residential suburb in the local government area of the City of Greater Dandenong. It is 23km south-east of the Melbourne central business district and has a population of around 20,000 people.

History

Springvale was named after the many natural springs found in the area. They provided a welcome source of water for livestock and travellers journeying between Melbourne and Dandenong.

Development in the area was slow at first. When the Springvale Railway Station was opened in 1887 and subdivisions of land were made in 1886, the area began to grow as more settlers arrived.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Springvale is home to plenty of recreational and sporting facilities. These include the Sandown Racecourse, a popular horse racing venue, and the Sandown International Motor Raceway. The racetrack hosts major car races, such as the Sandown 500.

Springvale also has a shopping centre located on Buckingham Street. It has lots of shops and businesses, but it specialises in fresh produce, seafood and Asian food.
