History

Europeans first settled Smythes Creek in 1838. It has been reported that gold was found at Smythes Creek in 1848. This is well in advance of the gold rush that ensued in Victoria.

The name of the area is derived from Captain John James Barlow Smythe. Captain Smythe was a squatter who had previously resided in Nintingbool.

There are plenty of activities to do in Smythes Creek. Horse riding is a popular hobby among visitors, and there are many cycling tracks throughout the region.

Smythes Creek is known for its mushroom farm, which supplies mushrooms as well as other fruits and vegetables to Ballarat. The area is also home to a few wines of the same name.
