Prahran, or ‘Pran’ as it is often called, is an inner city suburb in Melbourne. The trendy area of town has a population of more than 11,000 people.

History

The town was named in 1837 by George Langhorne. He created the name by combining two Aboriginal words which meant ‘land partially surrounded by water’. The settlement lies close to the Yarra River, and Albert Park Lake.

By the late 1800s, Prahran was a bustling town with a large choice of shops and department stores. It was a centre for entertainment and has housed a number of theatres.

In the 1960s two large housing developments were established to attract new life into the town.

Today Prahran is a thriving suburb with a host of bars, nightclubs, restaurants, shops and other entertainment.
