Portland is a city in Victoria and the oldest European settlement in the state. It is located 391 kilometres west of Melbourne on the Bay of Portland. It is the main urban centre of the Shire of Glenelg. It has a population of 9,601.
History
The Gunditjmara first inhabited Portland. They lived in small circular stone huts. They are renowned for their aquaculture development at nearby Lake Condah.
Whalers and sealers were the first Europeans to settle the area. Charles Tyers surveyed the township in 1839. Reverend Alexander Laurie founded a church and school around 1842. It was proclaimed as a city on 28 October 1895.

Portland is a major fishing port. Trawlers fish deep sea species like rockling, hoki and blue eye.
The city has a thriving arts scene. It is home to many potters, painters, photographers, jewellers, actors, sculptors and writers. Performances, exhibitions and theatre productions are regular.
