History

The area that is now Patterson Lakes was originally swampland. The Kulin people called the area home for centuries. The first European settlers arrived in 1803. The area was surveyed in 1866.

The swamp was finally drained in 1879. Residential building in the area began almost a century later, in 1973. The suburb was originally called Gladstone.

Patterson Lakes is a popular destination for water sports. It is home to the Patterson Lakes Marina and is a portal to Port Phillip. Many sailors launch their boats from the Patterson River Launching Way.

Patterson River is the suburbs most famous reserve. Other reserves include the Adelong, Gladesville, and Legana Court Reserves. Walkers enjoy several local trails. These include Bay Trail, Dandenong Creek Trail, and Peninsula Link Trail.
