Parkville is a suburb close to Melbourne’s CBD. It has a population of more than 6,000 and is home to the popular Royal Park.

History

The area of Parkville existed under different names in the 1800s until it was officially named in 1875. The name refers to its location by the extensive Royal Park. In the mid-1800s the University of Melbourne was established in the town, followed by a large residential area in the 1860s.

During the First and Second World Wars, the park was home to United States military members. It later went on to house the city’s hospital, the athlete’s village for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, and is the site of the Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The prosperous town has a large number of attractive residential areas, including the former athletes’ village, now known as Parkville Gardens.

Parkville has good transport links into the city centre.
