Pakenham is a satellite suburb of Melbourne in Victoria. It is situated 56 kilometres south-east from Melbourne’s central business district and has a population of 33,000.

History

The suburb of Pakenham was named after a man called Sir Edward Pakenham. He was a British general who fought in the Peninsular War. Governor Gipps sponsored the Neville family and Bourke family to migrate and settle in the area. They selected 5 miles of land now known as Upper Pakenham.

Pakenham Post Office was opened in 1888. It was originally called Pakenham Railway Station Post Office. It was renamed Pakenham East in 1908. In 1971, it became Pakenham Post Office.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Pakenham is known as a major retail centre with lots of shops and supermarkets. The suburb is home to the Cardinia Life Aquatic Centre and Cultural Centre.

There are weekend markets, as well as gyms and sporting clubs. On top of all of that, the town has lots of cafes, restaurants and bakeries.
