Oakleigh is a Melbourne suburb in the City of Monash local government area. It’s located 15km south-east of the central business district. Oakleigh has a diverse population of more than 7,500, including a sizeable proportion of Greek-Australians.

History

Before the onset of European settlement, Oakleigh was a flat, green region cultivated by the Kulin people. The area began to be developed in the 1840s, when Scottish immigrants started setting up farms. The Oakleigh Post Office opened in 1854, and the Shire of Oakley followed in 1871. Oakleigh boomed when it joined the Melbourne railway line, and grew into one of the largest independent cities near the Victorian capital. Oakleigh was finally enveloped by Melbourne in the 1950s, due to eastward expansion.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Thanks to its city heritage, Oakleigh’s former central business district is filled with grand old buildings. It still contains many amenities, such as banks, a police station, hair salons and pharmacies. The shopping district is famous for its many butchers and Greek cafes, as well as a pedestrian mall and numerous other restaurants and shops.
