Melbourne City Centre, often called by locals as “The City”, is the central district of Melbourne. It includes the oldest areas of the city and has a population of over 28,000.
History
The Hoddle Grid lies at the centre of this suburb. Named after designer Robert Hoddle, the streets in this area are laid out in a grid with all blocks being exactly one acre. The grid was started in 1837, and expanded over time. It runs from Queen Victoria Market to Flinders Street, and from Spencer Street to Spring Street.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Melbourne City Centre is a major financial hub. Known for its skyscrapers, five of the six tallest buildings in Australia can be found here. Melbourne was named as a UNESCO City of Literature in 2008, and street art is an important feature of this thriving urban centre.
