Maryborough is a small town on the Pyrenees Highway with a population of over 7,000. It lies 168km from Melbourne in the Shire of Central Goldfields.
History
The Dja Dja Wurrung tribe were the first people in Maryborough, before the first Europeans established a sheep station there in 1840. In the mid-1850s, the town’s population reached 50,000.
Maryborough gained borough status in 1857. It was the administrative and commercial centre of the area. In the early 1900s, the town’s remaining gold mine closed and it moved on to become a centre for the wool industry.

Today, Maryborough boasts daily train services connecting it with Melbourne, as well as regular coach and bus services.
The town has numerous sporting teams and facilities and hosts public events. This includes a Highland Gathering on New Year’s Day, the Golden Wattle Festival, the Gourmet Grapes and Gardens Weekend, and the Australasian Goldpanning Championships.
