Based in Victoria, Lysterfield is a suburb in Melbourne. It is 32km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of over 6,500 people.

History

The Lysterfield area was first settled in 1838. Initially, it was part of the neighbouring suburb of Narre Warren. It became ‘Lysterfield’ and its own suburb in 1874. Lysterfield’s primary industry was, and remains, agriculture.

In February 2009, bushfires affected this area. No homes were lost.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Lysterfield has a mix of residential and rural land. It has several alpaca farms. The area has many equestrian trails and horse riding schools. Lysterfield is home to many vegetable growers. This includes a large sprout farm.

Lysterfield’s commercial sector includes a farm shop and petrol station.

Dam Lysterfield Lake, built in 1929, and its surrounding park are popular leisure sites. Sailing, swimming, canoeing, mountain biking and walking are popular. The lake has some local historical sites. This includes the Donlane and the Dargon homestead site. Its surrounding orchards and ruins of the dairy are intact.
