No. Bleeding gums (called gingivitis) are common but not OK. Healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding is often an indication that the gums are inflamed. The inflammation is generally a response to the bacteria on the surface of the teeth. The bleeding may also arise from chronic gum disease or traumatic cleaning. At Lakeside Dental Care, we are concerned about your overall health and use the latest equipment to diagnose and care for your gum.
Early tooth decay is reversible and may sometimes be treated with fluoride without a filling. A more extensive decay will require a "filling". Your dentist will remove the damaged rotten part of tooth and repair it. It is important to have this done as early as possible to preserve the strength of the tooth and prevent bacteria damaging the nerve of your tooth. At Lakeside Dental care we believe that prevention is better than cure. We like to treat tooth decay at the earliest stage possible.
You may not know if you need fillings in your teeth. Many small to medium holes in teeth will not give you toothache. In fact, decay can sometimes eat out much of the tooth from the inside and you would have no idea it is happening. If your teeth are sensitive to hot, cold, or sweet food & drink, you may need fillings. Toothache that last a few minutes should be checked by your dentist. Teeth that cause severe pain in some cases will require more extensive treatment such as root canal therapy.
The position, shape, material, and chewing pressure, all influence how long dental fillings will last. When placing a filling, the dentist may have an idea of the expectation of the life of the filling. Life of the filling will also depend on how well you look after your teeth at home. In a check-up, your dentist is constantly monitoring the state of your fillings, looking for signs of weakness, cracking, decay or discolouration.
Most teeth with small to moderate decay or fractures can be restored to function with fillings. Where decay is extensive or fractures are large, more complex treatment may be required. Some teeth can be so badly broken down or fractured that they are unable to be saved.
Yes, baby teeth should be filled to prevent toothaches, to maintain the baby teeth for eating, and to hold the right amount of space for the adult teeth. If the baby teeth are going to be exfoliated (fall out) soon, then it is not always necessary to fill the teeth. This should be discussed with your dentist.
Root canal therapy may help to save your tooth. Inside your tooth is soft tissue containing nerves, and blood and lymph vessels, known as the tooth pulp. When the pulp cannot repair itself from disease or injury, it dies. A fracture in a tooth or a deep cavity commonly cause pulp death, as the pulp is exposed to bacteria found in your saliva. When the pulp is infected, it is best to remove it before it spreads into surrounding tissues in your face or jaw so you can keep your tooth for longer.
The best way to overcome your fear is to discuss your concerns with your dentist. Experiences as a child may become distorted by time and reinforced by out dated media presentation of stereotypes. Much has changed, thanks to technology and education, and Lakeside Dental Care have skilled professional dentists who can help if you are apprehensive about seeking treatment. We will communicate with you and listen to your concerns.
A dental fee is the cost of a highly trained and skilled professional treating your teeth in a hygienic and comfortable environment. The cost of maintaining correct infection control procedures alone can be very high. Dentists also need to pay auxiliary staff wages and maintain equipment. Lakeside Dentalcare takes pride in our cross-infection control standard and modern equipment, and all of our dentists actively have ongoing education to provide you with the most updated dental knowledge.
