Langwarrin is 42 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s central business district and is a semi-rural suburb of Victoria. The area has a population of over 21,000.

History

In 1886, the Langwarrin Military Reserve was used as a location for the defence of Port Phillip Bay and Melbourne from seaborne attack. Before World War I, the reserve was used for encampments of volunteer soldiery. The reserve was then used for military training after World War II.

After the arrival of the Stony Point railway in 1889, Langwarrin opened two post offices. On a sadder note, Langwarrin has seen many fires including the most recent in 2009.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There are two main shopping centres in the suburb and lots of small shopping strips. The McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park is worth a look when you next visit the area.

When it comes to sport, Langwarrin has its own soccer, Australian football, basketball, netball, tennis, cricket and dancing clubs.
