Lalor is a suburb based in Victoria. It lies 18km north of Melbourne’s central business district. The area is an ethnically diverse community and has a population of 19,873.

History

The suburb Lalor was originally part of Thomastown. Lalor is named after Peter Lalor. A scheme was created to build homes in the area in 1945. The housing scheme was called the Peter Lalor Co-operative Family Scheme. It sponsored by the Victorian Labour Party.

The housing scheme was stopped in 1954. You can still find streets in Lalor that are named by the Peter Lalor Co-operative Society after military and civilian men.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Lalor is home to the Lalor Shopping Centre, which has lots of shops and leading retail stores. Many shopping strips can also be found by the railway station.

The area has several recreation sites including Huskisson Avenue Reserve, City of Whittlesea Gardens and Partridge Street Reserve. Travel in and out of town is never a problem, as Lalor has Lalor railway station and many bus services.
