Welcome to Kilmore, VIC
Kilmore is a town in Victoria, 60km north of Melbourne. Contentiously claimed to be Victoria’s oldest inland town, it has a population of over 6,600.
History
Kilmore Post Office opened in 1843. Along with Ovens, they were the fifth and sixth to open in the Port Phillip District and were the first two inland post offices.
During early European settlement, the town was a stronghold of Celtic people from Ireland, Scotland, and Cornwall. Today, Kilmore still remains a strong Celtic area.
The town was the electorate of John O’Shanassy, the Irish-born Premier of Victoria in the mid-1850s.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Kilmore hosts a Celtic Festival every year in June and a market on the last Sunday of every month. The town is home to two private secondary schools and two primary schools. The Australian Training College is also based in the town. In operation since 1994, this college offers a range of nationally accredited courses.
