Kangaroo Flat is a suburb in the Greater City of Bendigo, Victoria. Located 5km south-west of the CBD, it has a population of over 9,000 people.

History

The name “Kangaroo Flat” comes from large groups of Eastern Grey Kangaroos found by the campsites of gold miners and in the vast bush landscapes. Local residents refer to the area as “The Flat”.

Before the gold rush, the district was part of a large sheep station known as “the Ravenswood Run”. The discovery of gold in 1850 brought many miners to the region.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Kangaroo Flat is home to many schools. These include Crusoe Secondary, Kangaroo Flat Primary, and St. Monica’s Primary.

It is also home to the Kangaroos Football and Netball team in the Bendigo Football League.

Lansell Square on the Calder Highway is a shopping centre with a K-Mart, Coles, and Safeway supermarket.
