The town of Healesville is located 52km north-east of Melbourne’s central business district within the Shire of Yarra Ranges local government area. Healesville is situated on the Watts River and is well known for the Healesville Sanctuary Natural Park. The town has a population of almost 7,000 people.

History

Named after the Premier of Victoria Richard Heales, the settlement of Healesville flourished during the Gippsland and Yarra Valley gold rush of the 1860s. This brought the railway into the area and people started settling in what is now a popular residential suburb.

In 1865 on May 1st, the Post Office was opened and the town also benefited from the construction of the Yarra Track that led to the gold fields in 1870.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Yarra Valley Railway and the area’s natural park attract large numbers of visitors into the town every year. There are several schools in the area including the Worawa Aboriginal College and sport is also well represented in the town.
