Hastings is a suburb in the Mornington Peninsula Shire. It has a population of 8,685 as of the 2011 census. The suburb is around 61km from Melbourne, and 20km from Frankston.

History

The name ‘Hastings’ is thought to come from a fishing town in England, or from Warren Hastings, a British imperial administrator. The area was previously known as King’s Creek and Star Point. The settlement of Hastings occurred around the 1840s, and fishing was the main industry in the area. The township then expanded throughout the mid and late 1800s. Although the growth slowed in the 1980s, there are new dwellings added to the area which have spurred on new population growth.

As one of the gateways to the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, Hastings is a popular stopping point for visitors. The suburb has plenty of large stores, including Kmart, and a modern library. Hastings also has one small beach, and many coastline reserves, as well as mangrove forests.
