Hampton is a suburb of Melbourne, 14km southeast of the CBD. Its local government area is the City of Bayside and it has a population of around 12,500.

History

Hampton began as an collection of market gardens in the 1840s and 1850s. Its main job was to supply fruits and vegetable to the city of Melbourne. In the 1850s, it became a popular place for tourists due to its beaches.

First called Retreat after the Retreat Hotel, it was in the 1800s when landmarks in the area, including the beach, were named Hampton after local market gardener, Dyas Hampton.

The locals favoured the name Hampton as it sounded more regal and was set when the railway station was renamed Hampton.

A wealthy bayside area of Melbourne, Hampton is home to a vibrant shopping centre. The shopping centre includes over 50 cafes and restaurants, as well as many fashionable boutique stores.
