History
The name “Gunbower” is thought to come from the Aboriginal words meaning “twisting”. Historians believe this refers to a creek or river. In 1845, Gunbower welcomed its first settlers to Gunbower pastoral station. In 1874, the town opened its first primary school. In 1876, Gunbower introduced a post office. In 1879, the town was gazetted.
The Gunbower Racing Club formed in 1881, and the annual Gunbower races are still popular.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
These days, Gunbower is known for its racing club. Every year in October, they hold the Gunbower Cup meeting. Gunbower features an abattoir, public reserve, three churches, and a hotel. Locals enjoy fishing and water sports.
