Garfield is a town in Victoria that falls under the Shire of Cardinia local government area. It’s situated 69km south-east of Melbourne’s central business district. Garfield has a population of over 1,400.
History
Once known by the more macabre name of Cannibal Creek, the town became Garfield in 1887. The name was changed to honour the former United States President James Garfield, who died in 1881. Garfield began as a lumber town, but later expanded its economy to include dairy and potato farming.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Garfield remains peaceful, friendly town with a strong sense of community. It’s seen a lot of residential growth since the turn of the millennium, with several modern estates popping up to contrast the older buildings. It has plenty of shops (including one that sells nothing but Ned Kelly Memorabilia) and good sporting facilities. These include golf, football, skateboarding, swimming, tennis, lawn bowls and netball. Horse riding is also common in the surrounding countryside.
