Situated 41 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s city centre, Frankston is a popular outer-suburb in Victoria. It’s often called the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula and has a population of 35,009.

History

In 1835, Frankston was a fishing village that served the Melbourne township. The official area of Frankston was established in 1854 when its first land sales took place.

The first brick house was built in Frankston in 1855 at Ballam Park. It still exists today and is looked after by the Frankston Historical Society. The 500-metre Frankston Pier is also a local landmark and was built in 1857.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Frankston has been a much loved seaside town since the 1880s and its beach is still one of the most popular in the whole of Victoria. It’s actually thought of as the cleanest beach in Australia.

The suburb is home to Frankston Mechanics’ Institute and the McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park. Frankston Arts Centre is worth a visit too, as it’s the largest art centre on the Mornington Peninsula.
