Foster is a rural town in Victoria. It’s perched on the South Gippsland Highway, and falls under the South Gippsland Shire local government area. Known primarily for grazing and dairying, Foster has a population of more than 1,600.

History

Foster began life as Stockyard Creek, a small resting spot for those travelling between Port Albert and Western Port. The name was changed to Foster in 1879, and a gold rush in the 1880s caused the township to bloom. Foster joined the railway line in 1892, and continued to prosper once the gold ran out. This was thanks to the strength of its dairy industry, which is central to the town’s economy to this very day.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Thanks to its prime location near the Gippsland coastline and several national parks, Foster is a tourist hotspot. Its former post office has been converted into a museum dedicated to the town’s history. Foster North Lookout and Mt Nicholl Lookout provide breathtaking views of the lush surrounding farmlands, and Foster has many interesting shops to browse as well.
