The Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy North is only 4km outside the city’s central business district. It is in the City of Moreland and Yarra local government areas. The suburb is a mainly residential development but it is also the home of two of Melbourne’s major dining and retail areas. It has a population of almost 11,500 people.

History
Before the arrival of settlers in the area, Fitzroy North was home to the Woiworung tribe. Many large houses were built on Eastern Hill. By the 1890s the area had become a mix of residential housing and light industrial.
By the 1930s it had a less desirable reputation as a slum and was suffering from economic decline.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area now boasts some examples of Victorian housing and other period features. The 5 schools in the area include primaries, secondary, and an English-German bilingual. Transport is via an efficient tram system, road links to the Highway Network, and the railway.
