Ferntree Gully is an eastern suburb of Melbourne, approximately 32km from the CBD. Ferntree Gully is located in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges.

The suburb takes its name from the gully of fern trees that grow within the Dandenong Ranges National Park. The gully is found along a creek between One Tree Hill and the Upper Ferntree Gully railway station. The area became popular as a retreat for urban dwellers in the 1870s, and even more so towards the end of the century once the area was made more accessible by the expansion of the Melbourne railway line to Upper Ferntree Gully. The land around the gully was given the status of a national park in 1927.

The Ferntree Gully Village shopping and business precinct is the commercial centre of Ferntree Gully Township. The precinct is home to an array of smaller retailers, cafes and restaurants. Ferntree Gully Village is also home to a library and community centre, where the Knox Festival is held each year. A standalone shopping centre, the Mountain Gate Shopping Centre, is situated on the corner of Ferntree Gully Rd and Burwood Highway. This centre houses two large supermarkets and a variety of other stores.
