History
Cattle farming was the primary industry in the area from the mid-1800s. In 1948, following a government scheme to bring electricity to the area, the first ski lodge was erected on the high alpine land. During the 1950s additional ski facilities were introduced and the town’s post office opened in 1958.
Cattle were banned from the summer slopes in the early 2000s because of their impact on the fragile alpine grasslands.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The resort is popular all year round with visitors. In summer they come to enjoy walking and cycling, and in winter take advantage of the snow-covered fields.
Up to 80% of the resort caters to beginners and intermediate level skiers. More than 4,500 tourist beds are available in the town and guests can also enjoy the many restaurants and cafes on offer.
