History

The area was proposed in 1851 and surveyed in 1856. It takes its name from the largest house in the area, which was called Elster. The village grew up around a creek. The ‘-wick’ suffix in the suburb name comes from that creek.

The first railway line arrived in 1861. A station followed in the 1880s. A tramline also arrived in 1889. The railway was an important part of the local sugar beet processing industry. It stopped running in 1916.

Lifestyle and Entertainment
Elsternwick boasts several shops, restaurants and cafes. It is home to the Daily Planet, which is Australia’s most famous brothel.

The suburb is also known for Elsternwick Park. Golfers can also enjoy Elsternwick Park Golf Club. Other local landmarks include Lisbon House, The Elsternwick Hotel, and the Jewish Holocaust Museum.
