History

The suburb takes its name from an early settler, Captain John Doveton. It was part of the Eumemmerring pastoral run in the 1830s. Doveton first became a housing estate in the 1950s. This was as a result of an industrial boom in Dandenong.

Many of Doveton’s first residents were factory workers. As the local factories closed, unemployment in the area rose significantly. As a result, Doveton is now home to some of the city’s cheapest housing.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Myuna Farm is the suburb’s main attraction. The farm gives children a chance to meet and interact with animals. The nearby wetlands are home to Melbourne’s second largest camp of flying foxes.

The Doveton Show is an annual event. It is run entirely by volunteers and coincides with the Melbourne Show.
