This large suburb of Melbourne has more than 16,000 residents. It is 17 kilometres west of the city centre.

History

The town used to be named Kororoit Creek after the small stream running through it. After the Melbourne Hunt Club used the area to stock their game deer, the new name was born.

The town was chosen to house Melbourne’s first explosives factory. The gold rush meant a great increase in demand. In the 1920s housing was established for factory workers.

Following World War II the area prospered thanks to a demand for products from the factory.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Deer Park has two state primary schools, a Catholic school, and a secondary college. Extensive housing development continues in the area. There is also a number of sporting opportunities.

The town has suffered in recent years because of association with the maximum security prison there.
