Croydon lies 27km east of the Central Business District of Melbourne, and has a population of over 23,000.

History

In 1840, the first settlers to Croydon used the area to graze livestock. The name “Croydon” came from the Lacey family who originated from Essex, England, and wanted to name it after Mrs Lacey’s home town. As well as animal farming, many fruit orchards developed making the area very agriculturally diverse. From the mid-1880s new businesses such as shops and a hotel established themselves in the area, and in 1912 Croydon was designated a town.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Croydon is a lively area that is focused around Main Street. Main Street hosts a diverse range of shops and eateries, and even a cinema. The Croydon Memorial Pool is open from November until the start of April and is the ideal way to keep cool on a hot summer’s day.
