History
The first European settlers arrived in 1837. Before then, the area was home to the Gulidjan people for thousands of years. The town is famous for the 1854 murder of the shepherd Thomas Brookehouse. Brookehouse’s killer, Patrick Geary, was hanged in 1871.
In 1914, Prime Minister Joseph Cook and opposition leader Andrew Fisher gave speeches in Colac. Both men announced Australia’s commitment to support Britain in the First World War.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Today, Colac’s main industries are agricultural. Local dairy, beef, lamb and fine wool merino farms flourish. This marks a departure from the area’s tradition of brickworks.
The town sits in the world’s third-biggest volcanic plain. Local sites of historical interest include Adam Rea’s Store and the Colac Botanic Gardens.
