Cockatoo is a town in Victoria, 48km southeast of Melbourne’s CBD. Its local government area is the Shire of Cardinia and it has a population of around 4,500.

History

Cockatoo takes its name from Cockatoo Creek, which runs through the town. It was also the town’s original name until it was changed in 1917.

It was first settled by Europeans in 1870, but progress was slow because the land was difficult to clear. The first Post Office opened in 1901 when the railway arrived.

After the end of WW1, many immigrants working in Melbourne, mostly Italians, moved to Cockatoo. It’s best known as one of the most destroyed towns after the 1983 Ash Wednesday Bushfires.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town is home to a community shopping centre that includes a supermarket, a hairdressing salon, and a yoga studio. It also has a town centre garden square, two main sporting areas, and Wright Forest, a 161-hectare reserve.
