Clayton is a suburb in the local government area of the City of Monash. It is located 19km south-east of Melbourne and has a population of over 15,500 people.

History

Clayton is named after an early settler called John Hughes Clayton who built a property in the area in the 1860s. Before this, the area had been used for farming as early as the 1850s.

A railway line was built between Gippsland and Dandenong in 1878 which passed nearby and a second settlement began which went on to form what is now called Clayton. The first post office was opened in 1887.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Clayton Railway Station is situated at the north of a busy shopping strip on Clayton Road which provides the town with its main commercial area.

The town is also known for its large number of science, research and technology institutes which include Monash University and the Australian Stem Cell Centre.
