History

John O’Shannessy took up a squatter’s licence for 40,000 acres in the 1840s. The area was originally heathland.

He passed his licence to John and Richard King. The pair began to transform the area.

In 1905, the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works extended water mains into the area. The Moorabbin Council soon began building roads in the area.

It had a post office by 1911. Development began to rejuvenate the suburb during the early 1980s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Clarinda is a thriving community of many cultures. Indian, Greek, Cambodian, Sri Lankan, and Vietnamese families live in the area. Local restaurants display the heritage of Clarinda’s residents. The area has three primary schools. Bus routes take commuters into Melbourne CBD.
