Churchill is a town in Gippsland’s Latrobe Valley. The town has a population of 4,750.

History

Early in its life, Churchill was called Hazelwood. The town is located at the foot of the Strzelecki Ranges. It was a service centre for the nearby Hazelwood Service Station.

The building of the town began in 1965. Churchill took on its current name after the death of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965. Urban development was fast. The first Post Office opened in 1966. A shopping centre opened the next year.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Churchill has a recently redeveloped retail precinct. The town also has an extensive belt of parkland. Residents and visitors can also enjoy Churchill’s Mathison Park. The park has walking paths around Lake Hyland.

The town has many local landmarks, including a tower known as the Churchill Cigar. The tower is tall and square. It was not designed to replicate Churchill’s famous cigars.
