History

The Gold Rush of the late 1850s brought settlers into Chiltern from nearby Beechworth and other goldfields in the Ovens Valley. A 150-year-old grapevine still grows in the grounds of The Grape Vine Hotel. It is a living reminder of the area’s rich past.

Tourists visiting the pretty Indigo Shire can wander Chiltern’s preserved streetscape. It tells a story of 19th century Australia and is often used in films. Historic buildings include the elegant Lakeview House, home to author Henry Handel Richardson. You can also visit the goldrush-era post office, courthouse, police cells and famous Dow’s Pharmacy.
