Caulfield is a suburb of Melbourne, 12km south-east of the CBD. Its local government area is the City of Glen Eira and it has a population of over 5,000.

History

The origin of the name is not known for certain. It is thought to be linked with Baron Caulfield of Ireland or John Caulfield, a pioneer of the colony.

The name was in use by 1853, when early maps would always place the area around the racecourse. Caulfield was mostly used as watering land for driving stock in the mid-1800s due to its swampy, low-lying land. In the following decades it was home to several grand mansions for wealthy Melbourne locals.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is best known for the Caulfield Racecourse and the Caulfield campus of Monash University. Caulfield also has an Australian Rules football team that competes in the Southern Football League.
