The small city of Castlemaine is located 120 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. It is the administrative centre of the Shire of Mt Alexander. It has a population of 6,751.
History
Dja Dja Wurrung people are the first owners of Castlemaine. They fought bitter, bloody battles with European settlers.
Major Thomas Mitchell passed through the area of present day Castlemaine in 1836. The first squatters came in 1837. Gold was first discovered in the area on 20 July 1851. Town lots were offered for sale from 1853 onwards. A local government was formed on 23 April 1855. This later became the city of Castlemaine.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Food manufacturing and tourism are Castlemaine’s two largest industries. The largest employer in town is KR Castlemaine.
The city’s botanical gardens are popular among visitors and locals. They feature Lake Joanna and many exotic flora species. A weekly produce market occurs on Saturdays.
