Carrum is a beach suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. It is located 33km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD and has a population of over 3,600. It forms part of the City of Kingston.

History

Carrum is named after Carrum Swamp which extended from Port Phillip Bay to Seaford. The swamp was the outfall of the Dandenong Creek, which is thought to have come from the Aboriginal word for boomerang. The swamp was drained in 1879 through the making of the Patterson Cut.

Carrum’s railway station opened in 1882 with the Post Office following in 1886. The early 1900s saw the locality develop significantly with the opening of schools, sports clubs and churches.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Patterson River which borders Carrum to the north has four boat launch ramps for public use. It is an extremely busy waterway and is considered the boating gateway to Port Phillip Bay. Next to the river are a number of recreational facilities including picnic areas, a café and bike trails.

Carrum has excellent access to public transport, shops, restaurants and schools, making it a popular location for families.
